"This book's approach to African American history was created out of necessity. African Americans need a book that will do more than make us feel good about ourselves. We need a book that will also investigate our history for weaknesses, vulnerabilities, mistakes, and blunders. By knowing our weaknesses and vulnerabilities, we will understand how to become strong. By understanding our mistakes and blunders, we will learn to avoid repeating them. Thus, our history can become a guiding light that will help us overcome our problems."

"Standing at the crossroads of history, large numbers of blacks are frustrated. They are frustrated with racism that won't go away. They are frustrated with the crises in Black America that won't go away. Young blacks are probably the most frustrated group in Black America. Young blacks between the ages of twenty and twenty-four have a higher unemployment rate than blacks overall. Young blacks have a higher imprisonment rate than blacks overall. Because their lack of experience in life makes them vulnerable, young blacks probably suffer more than any other group in Black America."
