"This book's approach to African American history was created out of necessity. African Americans need a book that will do more than make us feel good about ourselves. We need a book that will also investigate our history for weaknesses, vulnerabilities, mistakes, and blunders. By knowing our weaknesses and vulnerabilities, we will understand how to become strong. By understanding our mistakes and blunders, we will learn to avoid repeating them. Thus, our history can become a guiding light that will help us overcome our problems."

They are frustrated with the crises in Black America that won't go away. Young blacks are probably the most frustrated group in Black America.
