Excerpts
Mama, I’ll be home soon—a faint echo.
She heard it very clearly, she didn’t flinch.
(p.1)
Lost in thought?... Or was she losing herself? She wouldn’t know, either. For the moment, her mind was veiled in darkness—shrunken and blank.

She moved a step and shut her eyes, trying to recall... Yes, Mark said he’ll be home soon. And then, she heard it again. Mama, I’ll be... It went on.
(p.1)
Roy reached forward and touched her golden hair. “Remember, you once told me, ‘you’re like my son.’ So you’re like my mother and it’s perfectly alright for me to take care of you.”
(pp.3-4)
“Roy, I know you won’t leave me alone like this. Mark knows, and I know it too...” Her voice broke. Swallowing hard, she said huskily, “He ought to be here by tomorrow, if he’s not too busy...”
(p.5)
She asked softly, “Do you think he’ll be here tomorrow?...”
He remained still.
She said slowly and firmly, “I believe Mark will be here tomorrow. I believe...”
The spark in her eye made a faint glow in the dim light.
He looked at her for a long moment and said, “Yes, he will.”
(p.5)
As he closed his eyes, gently slipping into uneasy slumber, the picture of Mark’s face zoomed before him; Mark was saying: Roy, please don’t let mum be sad and lonely—his last words to Roy before he left the earth plane.
(p.7)
Pam went on huskily, “Thanks, Fred, I appreciate your visit and I’m relying on you.”
“I’ll do my best, don’t worry.”
“She receives the best... That’s what Mark would want for his mum and...that’s what I would want for her too.”
(p.13)
